Depression is not a one-size-fits-all diagnosis. There are many sources and manifestations of the condition, and it’s important to work with a clinician who will take the time to understand what you are going through. When we truly understand how depression functions in your life, we have a much better chance of beating it.
My approach to depression treatment is grounded in the cognitive-behavioral tradition, and I lean heavily on current, empirically-supported treatments like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, and Behavioral Activation. In plain English, that means that we probably won’t dwell too much in the past, though I will want to understand your history. Instead, we will focus on getting your life moving again.
What About Medication for Depression?
I don’t prescribe medication, though I am happy to work with prescribing physician when medication intersects with our treatment. In many cases, antidepressants are ill-advised as a life-long solution to depression, though they can be useful in getting a leg up on the condition. Whenever antidepressants are taken, it’s useful to have an open dialog between the patient, the prescribing physician, and the psychologist.
If you have been struggling with depression, it’s important to work with a skilled clinician who understands the condition, who will take the time to understand you, and who will stick with you through the difficult times. Please contact me to set up a meeting. If I am not the right clinician for you, I’ll help you find someone who is.
